His body of work is breathtaking: Gang Starr, Rakim, nasty Nas, KRS-One, Common, Mos Def, Snoop, Ludacris, Xzibit, Janet Jackson, The Notorious B.I.G., Kanye, Jay-Z and the list goes on.

And Primo is just getting started.

He’s wrapping up the highly-anticipated collab with Detroit’s Royce Da 5’9”, scratched over one of Black Milk’s new bangin’ tracks and spewed out a whole list of artists (new school and old) and projects that any true hip-hop head better not sleep on.

Simply: his label is “called Year Round Records because I work 24/7.”

This Saturday, after checking the free Jay-Z voter registration show at Cobo, the only place to be in the D is at Plan B where Primo will be the consummate professional, taking all those years of experience and pinpointing that energy into a few hours of pure hip-hop bliss.

Metromix couldn’t resist the rare opportunity to chat it up with NYC-based master. And this humble servant of the ‘biz was all ears.

Primo, no doubt you are going to bring it to the D Saturday night. It’s an intimate club setting at Plan B and DJ Graffiti setting it up is gonna be dope; what can you share about your set?
With me, I’m always excited to play anywhere. I don’t care if it’s for five people or 5,000 people, I’m going to just do my job and represent as a true hip-hop artist and a true DJ and as an MC (as I do work the mic).

Everybody that I’ve learned from -- from Run D.M.C. to Kool Moe Dee and LL (Cool J) and just watching people at that level perform…Public Enemy, Busta; I make sure I pull out the same energy no matter what. I don’t care if I’m sick and throwing up. I’ll throw up and get right back to doing it. I’ll recuperate later.

Nice. I talked to Royce not too long ago and we were talking about the project you two are completing…
We’re working on a new album. I’m the executive producer on the project so I pick the tracks that I think work. I’m doing a happy album. I’m doing seven cuts…

We were almost complete until he went to jail so it threw off our whole schedule. We actually did a record called “Gotta Shake This” which was about his drinking problem and getting into trouble…

So the jail time did throw some timing off and I just talked to him yesterday and he’s coming out (to NYC) right now and he’s thinking about a new single, so I am gonna try to make that happen and keep everything moving forward…

Right now, I’m working some tracks for 50 Cent, they’re past due, and Luda…Our time frames kept conflicting. Luda’s track is called “MVP” and he went in -- lyrically, he smashed it. There is a lot happening in New York City for me right now.

Keeping it on the Detroit level for another minute; I understand you might have something on Black Milk’s new album?
He reached out to me to do some scratches…I just did a hook for him and sent it. He’s dope man. I like his beats. He’s got really good beat-making skills.

If I get a MP3 in the mail or see a record that says produced by Black Milk, it automatically makes me want to listen to it.

That’s what I want to also be known for – if my name is on it, it’s reliable.

As a hip-hop producer; do you create your beats based around what you are feeling -- the sound you want to convey -- or do you try to work the tracks around a specific artist?
It’s always the artist. I feel like as a DJ, we should know how to tailor the tracks to the artist; I’ve always tailored the track to the artist…

The biggest of the biggest have turned down tracks that I’ve tailored to fit them; there’s been Jay-Z tracks that he didn’t end up using but they ended up going to other artists. One way or another, they end up coming out.

Your longevity, particularly in hip-hop is truly amazing. What’s the 21st Century creative challenge facing you?
I definitely want to score a film. I’ve always wanted to score a whole movie and do the soundtrack. A lot of people do soundtracks now and they’re real sloppy. I want it to be such a solid soundtrack where you see the whole thing played like a classic album.

Obviously your experience and passion comes through in your work, but do you feel that attitude you convey and bring is maybe missing by a lot of people in hip-hop today? There’s a lot of junk out there…
That’s why I move at a different pace -- because of my passion. I want it to be top-notch. You can be in a rush as long as the quality doesn’t suffer. My quality is more important than the money; I refuse to ever violate that code.

You gotta be patient. I was patient to get my deal; but I was eager and a little persistent.

But knowing the history is what makes me have longevity. I love and respect hip-hop. Some people just claim to love it and they don’t respect. If the respect part’s not there, how far do you really expect to get in this game if you want to be a part of it?

Going to NYC is always a good look... but this time was EXTRA special....

I went to meet "the man of few words" himself... the one and only... DJ PREMIER!!!

I got a chance to go to HQ and check the world famous studio... it was INSANE!!! Preem showed me the studio, the booth and i got to hear beats that I never thought i would ever get to hear... wow! I didnt take pictures in HQ because i was so nervous to ask... just incase he said "NO PICTURES"!! hahaa I met, OC, Show and AG, Teflon, and NYGz came through too.. Wuddup Panch!!!

but the next day Preem called me and told me about a party that we should go to... it was a birthday party at a club called Canal Rooms.... I was like dope...

So we rolled up and who do we see there? Doug E Fresh, Keith Murray, Positive K, Grandmaster Caz, Easy Mo Bee and a few others too.. It was a fun night... Preem introduced me to everybody.... There was some dude called Leon that was performing... WOOOOOOOOW... he was TERRIBLE!! hahaha

So whatever... next day... I called up Preem and asked him what was good for tonight??? ...he said "Its my Radio show tonight.. you gonna come through???" hahaha... I rolled down to the Lab where Preem was laying down the cuts for the OC and AG track "2 for the money" then we jumped in the car and went to the radio station...

this was an AMAZING experience... I met Big Shug while i was there too...

Big Gord was there as usual... and Preem and Shug were killin him on Air... hahaha it was super funny... I wish we could get that show in the UK... I would have so much fun listening... anyway... took a couple pics...

Back in the 90’s it seemed that in order to be somebody you couldn’t possibly do an album without the legendary DJ Premier stamping his trademark production. From Nas to Jay-Z and everyone in between, a DJ Premier track made every artist worth talking about official. These days, those calls have dwindled as the younger crop of emcees have opted to go another route while Premier nurtures a new batch of emcees.

But there’s one person that needs that extra punch to make his comeback official and he picked up the phone to make that call…

Marshall Mathers aka Slim Shady aka Eminem

"I just got a call from Eminem," Primo revealed exclusively to HipHopDX.

The song, titled “Keys To The City,” will indeed be on Eminem’s upcoming album (possibly leaked as the street single) and will be the first time Slim Shady will put his signature flow behind a DJ Premier backdrop.

“It’s a song that he actually produced and he wasn’t crazy about the track,” Premier says as he recalls the conversation between he and Em. “(I told him) as long as I can strip it clean and do what I do with your vocals it will be dope,” and the final result according to Premier? “It’s dope!”

The former Gangstarr producer explained that he thought the initial song Eminem did with his own production was great but Eminem called, wanting that “DJ Premier sound.”

But how exactly will the two sound together?

“Man…Eminem is back,” Premier continues. “He attacked the track with a new style, just fucking ridiculous, kind of like how he came with ‘The Way I Am’ but even more lyrical like the old Eminem.”

With a legend like DJ Premier saying that the song is “ridiculous” what more can you expect? Be on the lookout for “Keys To The City” off of the as-yet-titled Eminem album dropping this year.

DJ Premier on Nigger album, "If it sounds wack, im gonna diss him"

With Sha Money XL's One Stop Shop producer conference a week away, SOHH caught up with DJ Premier, to discuss Grammy Award politics, joining Christina Aguilera's family and his thoughts on Nas' new album.

Premier, whose helped craft some of Nas' biggest classics in the past revealed to SOHH his thoughts on the title of Nas' upcoming album, n*gger.

"I don't know why they're making a big deal," Premier said. "When I was coming up my parents had albums like That n*gger's Crazy (Richard Pryor), Sly and the Family Stone had "Don't Call Me n*gger, Whitey." No one made a big deal about that."

"I just hope it's a banging album, if you're going to use that title. If it was up to me to do an album called n*gger, believe me it's gonna sound just like the title, beats-wise, lyric-wise, content-wise-everything," he added. "As long as its banging I'm gonna applaud him. If it sounds wack, I'm going to be disappointed and diss him like anything else because I have that right as a fan. I'm a fan of Nas so let's hope he bangs it out."

Premier has not contributed to n*gger, but he remains open to working with Nas.

"If he calls me I'm here, but they haven't reached out. I haven't spoken to him in awhile."

Currently working on projects for his label, Year Round Records, Premier shared plans to head back into the studio with Christina Aguilera soon.

"I'm definitely working with her on the next album," Premiere said. "She's doing an all pop album again, but she wants me to keep the tone like what we did before. She's ready to start next month...She's so cool, she's like my little sister now."

After capturing a Grammy last year for Aguilera's "Ain't No Other Man," Premier discussed Mark Ronson's win over Timbaland at this year's awards for "Producer of the Year."

"With the Grammy's there's a lot of politics involved," Premier conceded. "I'm happy for Mark because he's a good producer, he is very talented, he deserves it as for what he did with Amy (Winehouse); but Tim, his album with Justin Timberlake was the biggest selling record out last year." [Editor's note: Justim Timberlake's FutureSex/ Love Songs was released in September of 2006)

"I don't let awards dictate that I'm dope," he explained. "I think I'm dope and I'm overlooked a lot, but I don't stress it. I just bang it out. I never take it personal because the industry is set up with a lot of favoritism involved, a whole bunch of things involved. I just stay positive knowing that I'm dope as a producer period."

In addition to recently producing "Criminal Minded '08"for Common, Q-Tip and KRS-One as part of the Smirnoff Signature Series mix, Premier is also working with Fat Joe, Joell Ortiz and Year Round Records artists NYGZ, Blaq Poet, Khaleel and Nick Javas

Most of you will have heard the track that Nike commissioned Kanye West, Nas, KRS and Rakim to do for the Nike Air Force 1 25th Anniversary.. That track was produced by Rick Rubin and the remix (Which we all know was the only version any of us heard) was produced by DJ PREMIER... There is no way any record company would have paid for a project such as this, to be done... So a big thank you to Nike for that...

So this month, Smirnoff and Cornerstone Promotions are taking the good idea that Nike started and thank GOD they did.... because we are able to hear music that we would never have heard... They are doing this to promote the new Smirnoff Signature Mix drinks, they’ve commissioned Common and Just Blaze to remake “The Light 08,” Q-tip and Cool n Dre to remake “Midnight 08,” and KRS-One and DJ Premier to remake “Criminal Minded 08.”

Saturday night was probably the best hip hop night I have ever been to.... Marley Marl and DJ Premier absolutely KILLED IT! Mr Thing who was on before Premo fucking tore it up!!! Its pretty brave playing before DJ PREMIER and MARLEY MARL!!! haha

The line was huge outside and I was in a damn T-shirt.... Waited for 45 mins to get in but when we got in, it was great!!!!

Premier played all the classics.... A friend of mine was a little upset because he wanted to hear Premier play other stuff rather than just Premier stuff....... For me I was at a Premier SHOW in my eyes... I wanted to hear Preem droppin tracks that HE composed and produced. I think many people in the crowd felt the same! It was CRAZY IN THERE!!!

I dont know if anybody remembers, but in the first half of 07 Saigon claimed in an interview on hiphopgame
1) To have recorded a few tracks over ORIGINAL Preem beats...
2) To be working on a whole street album with Premier...

Saigon: “I just started working with DJ Premier, We’ve been talking about it for a long time. We finally got up in the studio. I’m working on a whole street album with DJ Premier. I don’t mean a “mixtape.” I mean an album with all original shit. He just sent me two joints and I just knocked them off and they came out classic.”

Now anyone who follows real hiphop has probably heard Saigon has suddenly quit the rap game. Saigon said hes not going to release any more mixtapes or anything... FUCK!! I was real excited about his album with Just Blaze and I really hope i can eventually get it somehow, BUT i was even more excited about the PREMIER STREET ALBUM.. lets hope the existing Saigiddy and Preem tracks see the light of day!

NYGz OFFICIAL ALBUM - PROS & CONS

Now most people will remember the Gangstarr albums, but when DJ Premier stepped out of the Gangstarr productions and agreed to produce the ENTIRE album for another artist, that automatically made that album a must buy and a guaranteed CLASSIC! Im talking about Jeru Da Damaja and Group Home.......

Inside news tells me that DJ Premier has taken that step again and is going produce the 1st OFFICIAL album of the NYGz (Preems 1st signing to Year Round Records). This has not been done since Group Home and we still go nuts when we hear tracks from that album.

The album is called Pros & Cons and is due in the late 1st quarter of 08 but with Preems schedule I think it may be pushed back slightly.

More info will follow on the album as it comes in....
